Guatapé and the Piedra del Peñol are the classic day trip from Medellín, about 80 km and 2 hours each way. Hire the driver by the hour, stop where you want, and skip the tour-bus schedule.

What it costs

COP 40.000 per hour (about USD 13) for the car and driver, up to 4 passengers. A typical Guatapé day is 8 to 9 hours door to door: roughly COP 320.000 to 360.000 for the whole car, not per person. Fuel and tolls included. Entry to the Piedra (COP 25.000 per person) and lunch are yours.

Suggested itinerary

• 7:30 a.m. pickup at your hotel in El Poblado or Laureles (or straight from the airport if you land early).
• Stop at the Marinilla or El Peñol viewpoints on the way.
• Climb the 740 steps of the Piedra del Peñol before the heat and the crowds.
• Lunch and a walk through Guatapé's painted zócalos, optional boat ride on the reservoir.
• Back in Medellín by 5 p.m., or later if you want to stay for sunset.
